When was the last time you unplugged?
We spend so much of our lives attached to electronics, cell phones, television, constant streams of information, a never-ending supply of dopamine. The past 20 years have seen some of the worst down trends in health, both mentally and physically, even though we have all of the information on what the human body needs to live and function at its most optimal level. We still turn a blind eye to all of it for just one more shot of mindless scrolling dopamine.
Here are 10 things we know:
- Artificially increasing dopamine by way of external substances/activities that don’t require actual work or any delay in gratification, is terrible for our mental health.
- Exercise, still to this day is the single greatest form of medicine for both physical and mental ailments.
- Modern medicine is a joke. (When was the last time we “cured” anything? All we do now is “manage symptoms”)
- Obesity is rampant. Over 75% of the entire population is overweight/obese.
- Just 3 days away from electronics will re-wire your brain to “default” settings.
- Social media has singlehandedly destroyed any hint of healthy relationships.
- Blue light from modern screens is destroying our sleep and internal circadian clock.
- Human beings have never been as weak, frail and helpless as we are today.
- If the power went out for any extended period of time, more than 3/4 of all Americans would be dead.
- We rely far too much on electronics.
I believe it’s about time we all take a breath. Unplug. Be present in our own lives and in the lives of our loved ones. Presents is a gift that can’t be duplicated.
Take a look at your “screen time” monitor on your devices and you will get a glimpse into your true reality. The reality is you spend most of your time in a digital world. Fantasy land. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. are all amazing tools we can use to communicate, and have discussions in this modern age, however, we spend FAR too much time intwined with things we have zero control over meanwhile your own life is falling apart around you.
UNPLUG.
Today I want to challenge you. Leave your cell phone at home. Go to a coffee shop, go get lunch, take a walk, look, observe, THINK, ponder, use your imagination. Be honest with yourself about how it makes you feel to be so far away from your phone.
Regular “fasts” from technology can and will change your life. We don’t “NEED” our phones. If you’re younger than around 30 you’ve never known a life without being plugged in. It was beautiful. I speak of those times and it’s crazy to me how many people older than me even have forgotten what life was like before we were all plugged in.
UNPLUG.
