It’s no secret that if you’ve traveled outside of the United States the first thing you may notice about the food is the portion sizes. Here in America and many westernized countries our average plate/portion size is 3x that of everywhere else in the world. The fitness industry has done a terrible job at making the world believe you need “6 meals a day or your metabolism shuts down” this is not only bad advice in general, but it’s just scientifically and physiologically wrong. The human digestive system evolved over thousands of years to “feast and fast”.Eat when you have food. Burn stored calories when fasting. Now, this doesn’t mean that the “three meals a day” concept is wrong. That concept originated in the 17th century and it was made popular by Englanders who had achieved financial prosperity. Most people vastly underestimate the amount of calories not only that they consume, but that they need in the first place. There are many popular ways to try and gain an upperhand on portion control, the “fist size” method, the “myplate” method and others. However these, in my opinion, make things too complicated. Eat whole nutritious foods when you are hungry. Not when society or anything else TELLS you that you should be hungry. Eat satiating foods. Protein is far more filling than most other foods. There are alot of different ways you can control when and how much you eat. BUT the first step is deciding what your personal goal is with you nutrition? In a perfect world we could eat exactly what we need to fuel ourselves and that’s it. That is, however, extremely unrealistic. So… WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL GOALS?
