In this day in age when we are all on the hamster wheel of life, constantly running around, stressed, overly caffeinated, overly stimulated, and under-rested… we can forget that the most basic, easiest, and cheapest way for us to regulate our stress and regulate our bodies is just to breathe.
When was the last time you were even conscious about the way you are breathing? Most likely your breaths are shallow, your lungs are never being filled with air, your blood is being pumped through your veins with inadequate oxygen and your brain is being starved…
Well that all sounds like it is going to cause me MORE stress! HA! But, there is a simple way to mitigate all of this.
Take a few minutes out of your day and be mindful of how you are breathing. Inhale sharply and with purpose through your nose, hold that life-giving oxygen in your lungs for a few seconds. Let your cells saturate themselves with it and exchange that oxygen for carbon dioxide… Now exhale slowly out of your mouth, releasing the toxins and stress from your body. Do this for 5 minutes. I guarantee if you focus on your breath. If you focus on mindfully breathing. You will instantly feel better.
Breathing is a superpower. Now I know that sounds sensationalized, however, it is true. If your brain and body are properly nourished and properly allowed to intake adequate oxygen, you can start to regulate your body’s processes and functions mindfully. Our brain is such a powerful thing and most people don’t even realize the most powerful tool to change their entire life, is sitting right behind their eyes. It just needs to be able to BREATHE.
If you made it this far into my short tirade, you are on the right track. You don’t have to do yoga or be a “hippie” to breathe properly and give your body what it needs to function on a higher level.
I don’t care what breathing technique you use, there are hundreds of them a simple internet search away, you don’t have to hire anyone to teach you. You can if you want and if that is something you are interested in I can absolutely point you in the right direction!
Just breathe! In through your nose, hold, out through your mouth.
Much Love!
