Do you remember what life was like before the internet? Are you old enough to remember a time before everyone had a cellphone?
Most likely this isn’t something you actually think about often. Social media and the internet distract us in ways you wouldn’t even believe. How did we use to live without our phones?! How did we survive without posting every bit of our lives on social media?! What if I couldn’t show my 1000 followers pictures of my cat?! THE HORROR!
What if I told you that life without all of that was so much better. Simpler. Less distracted. More meaningful. We actually had to use our imaginations, have real conversations with people, CALL OUR CRUSHES HOUSE AND HOPE HER DAD DIDN’T ANSWER! Ha!
It’s a crazy thought, especially these days, about what life was like “before”. I remember. People were a lot nicer, the world seemed a lot bigger, you had to explore and get lost and try new things without reading 100 reviews first.
If you are old enough to remember I want you to think back and ponder how much better, different life was like back then. When was the last time you actually looked around when you were walking somewhere, (or driving… please stay off your phone when you drive hah!) I see it so much these days. Everyone’s head is in their phones, no one looking around. No one living in the moment. We are all trapped in this technological prison, designed to give you little hits of dopamine every time you see that notification light up.
Our brain’s reward systems are being overrun with stimulation that means NOTHING. How many “likes” you get on a photo, how many people watched your video, these things mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.
Life isn’t about wasting your time on the internet. Even though I appreciate you taking your time to come to my website and read this post… I challenge you… Leave your phone at home, go on an adventure, make MEMORIES. Talk to a stranger in a bar, look up, and smile at people. You will be surprised that the further you distance yourself from the little ball and chain that’s in your purse or pocket all the time, the happier you become. Studies say it takes 3 days to rewire your brain by taking a break from the internet or your phone… some of you are horrified at the thought of that much time away from your precious box of dopamine… think about that… HOW INSANE is it to think you can’t survive a day without it.
Trust me when I say it isn’t easy. I struggle still to disconnect myself from the matrix that is the internet. But when you finally do, you will be opening your eyes to a whole world of possibility. You will find yourself remembering things long forgotten in your past, you will become more creative, your imagination will restart and, I am willing to bet… you will feel reborn.
Take a day, leave your phone and all your gadgets at home. Go on an adventure, get lost… and find yourself.
Much love
–Adam
